Ministry of Sports and Recreation Clears Arrears Owed to Former Black Stars Coaches

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has officially cleared all outstanding salaries owed to current and former coaches of Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars.

This decisive action, spearheaded by Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, fulfills a key commitment made under the administration of H.E. John Dramani Mahama to ensure fairness and transparency within the country’s football administration.

The settlement follows a comprehensive audit and collaborative effort involving various state agencies. The initiative ensured that coaches—both past and present—were paid in full for the periods during which they were owed salaries.

Charles Kwabla (CK) Akonnor, who served as head coach from January 2020 to September 2021, and his assistant, David Duncan have received their outstanding salaries.

Former head coach Chris Hughton, who was dismissed after Ghana’s disappointing campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Côte d’Ivoire, has received money in owed salaries and sign-on fees. His assistants, George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, have received theirs too.

The current coaching team, led by Otto Addo, had also been unpaid for the last eight months, dating back to October 2024. That situation has now been rectified, with salaries paid up to March 2025.

Members of Addo’s technical team have also been fully compensated:

  • Joseph Laumann
  • John Painstil
  • Fatau Dauda
  • Francis Bugri Tampuli

This payment clears a significant backlog and is seen as a move to restore confidence and professional integrity in the management of the national team.

“This is not just about paying salaries—it’s about honoring contracts, restoring trust, and creating the right environment for our teams to succeed,” Minister Kofi Iddie Adams noted.

The Ministry’s actions have been widely praised as a critical step toward reinforcing the culture of accountability in Ghanaian football.
