Former President, John Dramani Mahama has pledged to complete the long-stalled maternity block project at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi. He made the promise on Monday, June 2, during a courtesy call by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and a delegation of chiefs at the Jubilee House.
The five-storey facility—under construction since February 2021 after the demolition of the old block—will include modern operating theatres and specialised wards for paediatric neurology, cardiology, haematology, and respiratory care. It will also house a Paediatric Infectious Disease Unit, Mother and Baby Unit, and a dedicated Paediatric Renal Unit.
Mahama also reaffirmed his commitment to completing the stalled Sewua and Afari Military Hospitals, stating these health infrastructure projects would be prioritized under his administration’s proposed “Big Push” Agenda.
“In the Health Sector, we will continue and complete the Sewua and Afari Military Hospitals. We will also continue and complete the KATH maternity and children blocks,” he said.
The pledge is part of Mahama’s broader plan to strengthen health infrastructure, particularly in the Ashanti Region.
