“Desperate Situations Need Desperate Solutions” – Hon. Buckman Defends GHS1 Energy Levy

By: Mensah Maxwell

In an exclusive interview with Mensah Maxwell, Parliamentary Correspondent of Adoa TV, Hon. Buckman Fiifi Phillip, Member of Parliament for Kwesimintim Constituency, defended the proposed GHS1 energy levy, stating that “desperate situations need desperate solutions.”

The government’s proposal to impose a GHS1 energy levy on fuel, diesel, and oil has sparked intense debate among Ghanaians.

While some argue that the levy will exacerbate the already high cost of living, others believe it’s a necessary measure to address the country’s energy challenges.

According to Hon. Buckman, the energy levy is a crucial step towards resolving Ghana’s energy crisis. “We cannot continue to rely on borrowed money to finance our energy needs.

The levy will provide a stable source of funding for our energy sector, ensuring that we can provide reliable and affordable power to our citizens.”

When asked about concerns that the levy will increase the cost of living, Hon. Kwesimintim acknowledged that it may have some impact but emphasized that the benefits far outweigh the costs.

“We understand that the levy may add some burden to our citizens, but we must consider the long-term benefits.

A stable energy sector will attract investments, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.”

The MP also assured that the government will implement measures to mitigate the impact of the levy on vulnerable populations.

As the debate on the energy levy continues, Hon. Kwesimintim’s comments provide insight into the government’s thinking on this critical issue.

While opinions may vary, one thing is clear – Ghana’s energy sector needs urgent attention, and the government is willing to take bold steps to address it.
