The ongoing strike by members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has significantly disrupted operations at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
Medical Director Dr. Leslie Issah Adam-Zakaria reported that the absence of nurses and midwives has impacted critical departments, including outpatient services, emergency units, operating theatres, antenatal clinics, and labour wards.
Dr. Adam-Zakaria noted that doctors are now performing both their usual duties and those typically handled by nurses, leading to increased workload and operational strain. He emphasized that rotation nurses, who require supervision, are also unavailable due to the strike.
“The challenge we are facing is that doctors have to do some of the work of the nurses. We don’t have rotation nurses supporting us because they cannot work unsupervised, so they are not available”.
Despite these challenges, no major security incidents have been reported, thanks to the presence of a police post within the hospital.
The strike has left doctors overstretched, and the limited number of nurses from other unions has not sufficiently mitigated the impact of the GRNMA’s withdrawal. Dr. Adam-Zakaria expressed hope for a swift resolution to alleviate the pressure on hospital operations.
