As the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) marks its 50th anniversary, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has highlighted the challenges facing the region, particularly with regards to the free movement of goods.
In a statement, Hon. Ayariga noted that while ECOWAS has made significant progress in promoting regional integration, the free movement of goods remains a major challenge. “Fundamentally, there’s limited free movement of goods, not persons,” he emphasized.
The Majority Leader’s comments come at a time when ECOWAS is celebrating five decades of promoting regional cooperation and integration.
While the region has made significant strides in areas such as trade and economic development, the free movement of goods remains a major hurdle.
Hon. Ayariga’s statement highlights the need for ECOWAS member states to work towards removing the barriers that hinder the free movement of goods.
This, he believes, is critical for promoting economic growth and development in the region.
As ECOWAS marks its 50th anniversary, Hon. Ayariga’s comments serve as a reminder of the challenges that still need to be addressed.
However, they also underscore the importance of regional cooperation and integration in promoting economic growth and development.
