The President for the National Association of Registered Midwives Ghana (NARM-GH), Mrs. Leticia Asaaba Atiah has accused the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) of intimidation and harassment.
This accusation comes amidst the ongoing strike by GRNMA members over their conditions of service agreement with the government. The President of NARM-GH in an interview with ADOA TV, Claimed the GRNMA has been forcing midwives to join their strike.
She said the National Association of Registered Midwives are not against the strike action GRNMA is embarking on. She said it will be better for them as members of NARM-GH to be recognised as an association and given an opportunity to bargain for themselves , “We are working, and we’re not getting what we want. If we have our separate union and bargaining rights, all these harassment and intimidation will stop”.
This development highlights the deep rift between the NARM-GH and GRNMA.
While the GRNMA has been pushing for better conditions of service for its members, the NARM-GH has been advocating for the rights of midwives to be recognized and respected.
The strike by GRNMA members has had significant implications for the healthcare sector, with many hospitals and clinics struggle to cope as nurses and some midwives are on strike. The accusation of intimidation and harassment by the NARM-GH is likely to complicate the situation and may lead to a prolonged dispute.
