NPP Flagbearer Race: Dr. Yaw Adutwum Declares Intent to Contest

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the immediate past Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for the Bosomtwe Constituency, has formally declared his intention to contest for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2026 general elections.

His announcement was made via social media on June 18, just a day after the NPP officially disclosed that its presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he stated.

Dr. Adutwum’s declaration marks one of the earliest public announcements in what is expected to be a competitive race to lead the party into the next general elections. Known for his technocratic background and reforms in Ghana’s education sector, he brings both ministerial experience and parliamentary insight into the contest.

While the declaration has sparked interest within political circles, the NPP is yet to officially open nominations for the flagbearer position. The party’s leadership is expected to release guidelines and timelines in the coming months.

Dr. Adutwum, an educator by profession, served as the Minister of Education from 2021 to 2025, during which he championed major policy reforms, including the expansion of the Free SHS program and STEM education initiatives. His tenure was marked by a focus on infrastructure development and educational transformation.

As the race heats up, political observers are watching closely to see which other party heavyweights will throw their hats into the ring.

Stay tuned for more updates as the NPP prepares for a decisive leadership contest ahead of the 2026 polls.
