PURC Announces 2.45% Increase in Electricity Tariffs Effective July 1

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs for all categories of consumers, effective July 1, 2025, following its scheduled quarterly review.

In a statement issued today, the Commission explained that the upward adjustment was necessary to maintain the financial viability of utility service providers and ensure the continuous supply of reliable electricity to consumers.

The quarterly tariff review process takes into account several critical economic indicators, including the projected average inflation rate of 20.67%, the Ghana Cedi to US Dollar exchange rate of GHS10.3052, and an increase in the Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACoG) to USD 7.7134/MMBtu.

“The Commission has carefully analysed the existing parameters and, considering the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of Ghanaians, has approved a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs across board and a 0% increment in water tariffs,” the statement said.

New Electricity Tariffs

The new tariffs across various consumer categories are as follows:

  • Lifeline customers (0–30 kWh): increased from GHp77.63/kWh to GHp79.53/kWh
  • Residential customers (301+ kWh): increased from GHp232.39/kWh to GHp238.09/kWh
  • Non-residential users (301+ kWh): now at GHp202.17/kWh
  • High Voltage Mines customers: up from GHp495.93/kWh to GHp508.09/kWh

Meanwhile, the Commission has announced that water tariffs will remain unchanged for the third quarter of 2025, despite rising operational costs in the water sector.

The PURC reiterated its commitment to balancing the sustainability of utility service providers with the economic realities faced by consumers, especially amid current inflationary pressures.
