Gov’t announces activities for three days national mourning to honour the departed victims of the helicopter crash.

Accra, August 7, 2025

The Government of Ghana has declared a three-day national mourning period in honour of the eight victims who tragically lost their lives in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The mourning period began on Thursday, August 7, and will continue through Saturday, August 9, 2025, providing the nation with an opportunity to grieve collectively, honour the departed, and reflect on their lives and public service.

According to a statement from the Office of the President, the official programme for the mourning period commenced on Thursday with a public laying of flowers and a candle-lighting ceremony at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Jubilee House, the seat of government.

“This solemn act of remembrance will allow citizens to honour the victims and express their condolences,” the statement read.

The tribute ceremony began at 1:00 p.m., and members of the public, along with the families and friends of the deceased, were respectfully invited to participate.

The laying of flowers and candle-lighting will continue on Friday, August 8, allowing for wider public participation across the mourning period.

Call for National Unity and Reverence

The government has urged all Ghanaians to observe the days of mourning with dignity, unity, and reverence, as the country grapples with one of its most devastating losses in recent memory.

“These three days offer our nation a vital opportunity to collectively mourn and reflect on the profound loss we have experienced,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.

Flags at Half-Mast Nationwide

As part of the mourning observance, all national flags are being flown at half-mast across the country, and President John Dramani Mahama has suspended all official engagements for the remainder of the week.

The eight victims, including two cabinet ministers, were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter on a national assignment to Obuasi when the aircraft crashed and burst into flames, killing everyone on board.
