At the sidelines of the 2nd edition of the Duku Festival Cycling Race, on August 17, 2025, at Osu Total Filling station, Director of Sports, ASP Bernice Timbilla rekindled the hope of many young athletes especially cyclists as the Ghana Police Service revealed plans to recruit talented sportsmen and women into its ranks.
ASP Bernice Timbilla addressing the media emphasized that the initiative aims to provide young athletes with both recognition and opportunity. “We are working on recruiting sportsmen and women. As a matter of facts the Police Board is doing a whole lot to make sure we give back to society by making sure people or Athletes who are doing well and can represent not just Police can have a stable job to prevent them or take them out of the street.So yes it is something that the Police Service is looking at and I believe that when the time comes,it will be one of the key instrument that will be used for recruitment.”
The move, according to her, is part of the Service’s broader vision to empower the youth while strengthening sports development in Ghana. For many cyclists and athletes who struggle to balance passion with livelihood, this announcement comes as a ray of hope and an opportunity to ride for the Police. The Duku Festival Cycling Race itself reflected the growing interest in cycling across the country, with an impressive crowd, celebrating sporting excellence, unity, and cultural heritage, the Organizers believe that such initiatives, coupled with institutional support like that of the Police Service, will change the face of Ghana’s sporting future.
