Arne Slot Slams Hugo Ekitike for “Stupid” Red Card in Carabao Cup Clash

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has publicly criticised striker Hugo Ekitike for picking up what he called a “stupid” red card during the team’s 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Southampton on Tuesday night.

The French forward, who scored in the 85th minute to help seal the Reds’ win, was sent off moments later after celebrating his goal by removing his shirt—earning a second yellow card and an early exit.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, a visibly frustrated Slot did not mince words:

“I hope so [he doesn’t do it again]… it was stupid, not smart in every sense. The good thing was that his teammates helped him because we got the win over the line. He’s now suspended for Saturday [against Crystal Palace] and that is far from ideal.”

Debut Goal Overshadowed

The dramatic ending to the match also featured a debut goal for new signing Alexander Isak, who opened his Liverpool account with a composed finish.

However, the post-match narrative was dominated by Ekitike’s avoidable dismissal, which leaves Slot short of options ahead of the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace at Anfield.

The 21-year-old Ekitike has had a promising start to life at Liverpool, but this latest incident could dent his momentum and test his discipline under Slot’s demanding leadership.
