CID Chief: 10 Suspects in Rural Bank Robberies to Face Court Soon

The Head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, has revealed that ten suspects arrested in connection with a series of rural bank robberies will be arraigned “as soon as possible.”

Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, September 24, COP Donkor confirmed that a total of 15 individuals have been linked to the robberies, which occurred across Ashanti, Central, Ahafo, Western, and Eastern Regions.

“All the suspects are in custody and will be put before the court while efforts are intensified to get those at large arrested,” she stated.

Status of Suspects

  • 10 arrested and in police custody
  • 3 killed in shootouts with police
  • 2 still at large, with a manhunt underway

COP Donkor added that some of the suspects have confessed to their roles during police interrogation.

“From investigations so far, I can report that some of the suspects, upon interrogation, have confessed to their involvement in the robberies,” she noted.

Weapons and Items Recovered

The six-month intelligence-led operation led to the recovery of a large cache of weapons, cash, and stolen items, including:

  • 3 AK-47 assault rifles
  • 1 single-barrel gun with 1 AAA ammunition
  • 7 pump-action guns with 96 rounds of AAA ammunition
  • 3 Bruni pistols with 40 rounds of ammunition
  • 1 M&P pistol with 4 rounds of ammunition
  • Cash:
    • GH¢18,845
    • US$104
    • 190 Liberian dollars
    • ₦5,800 (Naira)
    • CFA 31,000
  • A quantity of assorted Ghanaian coins
  • 6 vehicles and 4 motorbikes
  • Several mobile phones and jewellery

Notable Discovery

One of the AK-47 rifles recovered had been previously issued to the Ghana Police Service, bearing serial number GH GP/ASH/TEPA/TP/B1523. It was traced to Corporal Francis Adu Yaw, who was killed by armed robbers on the Bibiani-Goaso highway on November 29, 2024.

“This is an indication that this same gang committed that heinous crime,” COP Donkor disclosed.

High-Profile Attack

The gang’s recent robbery occurred at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 14, when they stormed the Saint Martins De Porres Cooperative Credit Union, armed with pump-action guns and AK-47s. They held the security guard and his wife hostage before fleeing with cash. A loaded AK-47 magazine was recovered at the scene.

Sustained Effort and Leadership

COP Donkor credited the breakthrough to six months of sustained intelligence operations, carried out under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police.

“Through sustained intelligence operations, the Ghana Police Service has successfully dismantled the notorious criminal syndicate behind several robberies in various regions of the country,” she stated.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to public safety and vowed to bring all accomplices to justice.
