TEWU Defies NLC Directive, Continues Nationwide Strike Over Delayed Conditions of Service

The Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) has rejected a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC) to suspend its ongoing nationwide strike, which began on Friday, September 19, 2025.

The union declared an indefinite industrial action in protest against what it describes as the government’s undue delay in signing their conditions of service. TEWU has also criticized the government for what it terms neglect of non-teaching staff in the education sector.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, September 23, National Chairperson Salamatu Mahamah Braimah affirmed that the strike will continue until their demands are fully addressed.

“Until we conclude and sign the conditions of service, we will not come to class. The NLC themselves know that we went by the rules, and this is never illegal. We have given them the chronology of events. So why is NLC writing to us?” Braimah questioned.

TEWU insists it has followed due process leading up to the industrial action and maintains that the strike is legitimate.

The union’s stance sets the stage for a standoff with the NLC and the government, as academic and administrative operations in schools remain disrupted across the country.
