A new poll by Global InfoAnalytics has positioned Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, as the leading contender to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2028 general elections.
According to the nationwide survey, Haruna commands 30% support, placing him ahead of:
- Johnson Asiedu Nketia, NDC National Chairman — 24%
- Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Finance Minister — 18%
- Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff under President Mahama — 10%
- Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu — 8%
Other potential aspirants, including Eric Opoku, Joshua Alabi, Armah-Kofi Buah, and Kwame Awuah-Darko, each secured 2%, while Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah polled at 1%. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije failed to register significant support.

Stronger Lead in Hypothetical Scenarios
The poll also tested alternative scenarios to gauge the depth of Haruna’s support. In a three-man race excluding Ato Forson, Haruna widens his lead significantly:
- Haruna Iddrisu – 45%
- Asiedu Nketia – 37%
- Julius Debrah – 18%
Among core NDC supporters, Haruna’s support rises to 47%, and he performs even better in swing regions, where he garners 48%.
Tight Race Without Haruna
However, in a scenario where Haruna is absent, the race tightens dramatically:
- Asiedu Nketia – 40%
- Ato Forson – 38%
- Julius Debrah – 22%
Among loyal NDC voters, the contest is virtually tied — Asiedu Nketia at 42%, Ato Forson at 41%.
Interestingly, Ato Forson gains an edge in swing regions, leading with 47% compared to Asiedu Nketia’s 38%, suggesting regional dynamics could play a critical role in determining the party’s future leadership.
Implications for the NDC’s 2028 Strategy
The poll results suggest that while Haruna Iddrisu is currently the clear frontrunner, his absence would set the stage for a fierce two-way contest between Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson — potentially reshaping the NDC’s succession landscape.
As the NDC begins to look beyond 2024, the battle for the party’s future leadership appears to be heating up earlier than expected.
