The Ghana Police Service’s Cyber Crime Unit has arrested 68 suspected cybercriminals and seized over 885 electronic devices in a major crackdown on online fraud and cyber-related crimes.
The announcement was made by Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, during the launch of the 2025 National Cyber Security Awareness Month and the inauguration of the Joint Cyber Security Committee.
“Our cybercrime units successfully arrested 68 suspected cybercriminals, identified 108 victims, and seized over 885 electronic devices linked to illicit activities,” the Minister disclosed.
He hailed the operation as a clear demonstration of the government’s firm resolve to combat cybercrime and protect Ghana’s digital landscape.
“This remarkable achievement underscores the unwavering commitment of the Government of Ghana to safeguarding our digital space, protecting our citizens, and contributing to the global fight against cybercrime,” Mubarak added.
Meanwhile, President John Mahama used the occasion to unveil a $50 million FinTech Growth Fund, designed to boost Ghana’s digital economy and strengthen cybersecurity infrastructure. The initiative is a core part of the government’s broader Reset Ghana Agenda.
“As we expand digital public services and mobile money usage, we must reinforce the systems that safeguard them,” the President stated.
“This is why under the Reset Ghana agenda, my administration has prioritised digital transformation as a key part of our national development policy. And cybersecurity is at the core of that transformation.”
Flagship Digital Programmes Underway
President Mahama also outlined four key digital initiatives already in motion:
- One Million Coders Programme – A nationwide effort to train young Ghanaians in software engineering, data analytics, and cybersecurity.
- Digital Jobs Initiative – A public-private partnership aimed at creating sustainable technology-based employment opportunities.
- Digital Infrastructure Expansion – Focused on increasing access to high-speed internet and mobile connectivity in underserved areas.
- E-Government Acceleration Programme – Designed to digitize public services and make them more accessible and efficient.
The newly launched FinTech Growth Fund will support local start-ups in developing innovative financial technology solutions tailored to Ghanaian needs—with potential for expansion across Africa.
“We want Ghanaian innovators to develop solutions for Ghanaian challenges and also expand them across Africa,” President Mahama emphasized.
The announcements come amid increasing concern over cyber threats in Ghana, as digital adoption accelerates across sectors including finance, health, education, and governance.
