Chairman Wontumi to Face Trial Over Illegal Mining Charges

The trial of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is set to begin on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

This development comes after his appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service earlier today, in compliance with a directive from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine.

Dr. Ayine had earlier issued a warning on Friday, October 3, that Chairman Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to report to the CID, noting that charges against him had already received approval.

Chairman Wontumi is facing charges related to alleged illegal mining activities linked to Akonta Mining Limited, a company reportedly associated with him. He has been granted bail to the tune of GH¢1 million after meeting with investigators, accompanied by his legal counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi.

Addressing the media after the engagement, Chairman Wontumi praised both the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General’s Office for their professionalism throughout the process.

“I want to congratulate the police system for showing professionalism. We also want to thank the Attorney General for facilitating the entire process,” he stated.

He confirmed that he is being charged with “mining without a license” and expressed confidence in the judicial process.

“As you have seen, we will go to court, and that is where the decision will be taken. We are not to maintain innocence, but we are allowed to proceed and then present our defence,” he said.

The trial is expected to attract national attention, given Chairman Wontumi’s high-profile role within the opposition party and the ongoing debate over illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.
