Chairman Wontumi Granted GH₵15 Million Bail, Placed on Stop List Over Mining Offences

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail in the sum of GH₵15 million by the High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra, following criminal charges filed against him over alleged breaches of Ghana’s mining laws.

As part of the bail conditions, Chairman Wontumi has been placed on a stop list at all entry and exit points in the country, effectively restricting his movement outside Ghana until further notice.

Charges and Court Appearance

Wontumi faces six criminal charges filed by the Office of the Attorney-General, in connection with activities linked to Akonta Mining Company Limited, of which he is the owner. He pleaded not guilty to all charges during his court appearance.

A second accused, Kwame Antwi, is currently at large.

Bail Conditions

Under the terms of the bail:

  • Wontumi must provide three sureties, two of whom must justify with landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.
  • He is required to deposit all passports with the Registrar of the court.
  • The sureties must submit photocopies of their Ghana Cards and digital addresses to the court.
  • He must report to the case investigator on the first and third Monday of every month.
  • The investigator is to file proof of compliance for the court’s review.

Wontumi will remain on the stop list until his bail terms are reviewed or modified by the court.
