The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, announced today that the government has made “significant progress” in settling unpaid salaries and allowances owed to health workers nationwide.
According to Mr. Akandoh:
- Financial clearance has been secured for 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who began national service in early 2024, enabling the payment of their salaries and allowances.
- Clearance was also renewed for 13,500 nurses and midwives recruited late in 2024 (whose initial clearance had expired on December 31, 2024), ensuring that their full payments can now be processed.
The Minister acknowledged that these arrears were largely inherited by the current administration and pledged continued commitment to resolving outstanding back-pay issues. He added that the Ministry is initiating further measures to bolster systems and prevent recurrence of delayed payments.
Mr. Akandoh urged affected health personnel to remain calm and exercise patience, while directing any unresolved issues through official channels for prompt redress.
“The Ministry is putting in place measures as part of a broader agenda to strengthen Ghana’s health system and ensure the welfare of its workforce,” he said.
