Kofi Adams: “Every Ghanaian Player Has a Chance to Make the World Cup Squad”

Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, says that every Ghanaian footballer—local or abroad—stands a chance of representing the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, provided they are selected by the technical team.

His remarks follow Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium, a result that sealed the country’s fifth World Cup qualification.

Selection Based on Merit, Not Politics

Speaking to Asempa FM, the Minister, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency, emphasized that final squad selection lies solely with the coaching staff:

“Every Ghanaian who knows how to play has the opportunity to go to the World Cup if the coach decides that he wants,” Mr. Adams said.

He acknowledged ongoing public discourse about players of Ghanaian descent abroad, such as Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi, but reiterated that talent and the coach’s discretion will determine who makes the squad:

“I have watched some players, and I believe that they are good enough. Despite their talent, the final selection… remains with the technical team.”

Commitment to Strengthening the Team

Minister Adams pledged full support to strengthen the national team ahead of the 2026 tournament:

“That is my responsibility, and if I am contacted to help, I will… Even some of the players playing now, I did some background work to get them to the national team.”

He also clarified that his assistance transcends political lines:

“It’s not about my party people. I even talked to people in the opposition just to bring them to the national team.”

Controversy Around Diaspora Players

His comments come amid criticism from sections of the public labeling diaspora players as “opportunists” for making themselves available only in World Cup years. The Minister did not directly respond to these claims but reinforced the importance of meritocracy and unity in national team selections.

World Cup Draw Set for December

Meanwhile, the official draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place on December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
