The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, has said President John Dramani Mahama is in no hurry to appoint a new Minister of Defence following the tragic passing of Dr Edward Omane Boamah.
Dr Boamah and seven others died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, a national tragedy that prompted the appointment of Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson as caretaker Defence Minister.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, Mr Kotoko stated:
“President Mahama is not under any pressure to appoint a substantive minister at this point. What he is demonstrating is true leadership. There is already a capable Deputy Minister, my colleague Brogya Genfi, who supports the caretaker minister effectively.”
He described the President’s cautious and deliberate approach as a sign of measured and responsible leadership, especially during a period of national mourning and reflection.
Lean, Focused Administration
Mr Kotoko also defended the size and structure of the current administration, saying:
“President Mahama has operated with just 56 ministers for several months. Even with the recent additions bringing the number to 58, it’s still far more efficient than the 125 ministers under the previous Akufo-Addo government.”
He stressed that the President’s focus is on stability, prudence, and good governance, rather than reacting to external pressures for quick appointments.
Mr Kotoko concluded that this approach highlights President Mahama’s ongoing commitment to fiscal discipline and effective leadership, placing national interest above political convenience.
