Bagbin Clears Adwoa Safo of Alleged Defection in Speaker Vote

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has firmly refuted long-standing claims that former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, voted for him during the contentious election that saw him become Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

Mr. Bagbin was elected Speaker in January 2021 after a chaotic and closely contested vote, amid reports that one New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament had crossed party lines to support his bid. Speculation within the NPP quickly centered on Adwoa Safo as the alleged defector — a charge that sparked internal friction and public scrutiny.

However, speaking on Monday, October 13, during a courtesy call by the family of Apostle Kwadwo Safo, Mr. Bagbin publicly exonerated the former MP.

“I call her my daughter because when I came to Parliament, she was a small girl. So, I began calling her my daughter before she joined politics and entered Parliament. But we belong to different political traditions,” the Speaker said.

He suggested that his long-standing personal bond with Adwoa Safo may have led to the misunderstanding.

“Because she is my daughter and we love each other, when I was contesting to be Speaker, they thought she voted for me,” Mr. Bagbin added.

The Speaker’s clarification aims to put to rest years of speculation and internal party tensions over the controversial vote, which marked a historic moment in Ghana’s parliamentary democracy.
