The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that Cabinet has approved the absorption of 6,200 teachers who have been working for over eight months without pay.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Ministry on Tuesday, Mr. Iddrisu revealed that the decision follows a petition submitted by the affected teachers, who had been engaged in prolonged service without remuneration.
“A few weeks ago, myself and the Chief Director received a petition from some teachers who were unhappy with the government over their unending work for a number of months without their pay,” he stated. “I’m happy to announce that Cabinet has given approval for the 6,200 teachers to be absorbed. We’ll begin the process in due course.”
Payment and Validation Process to Begin
The Minister assured the affected teachers that they will soon be issued staff identification numbers and receive their accumulated salaries. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving the issue permanently.
In addition to the teachers, Mr. Iddrisu disclosed that Cabinet has also authorised the Ministry of Finance to reallocate funds to address similar concerns in the health sector.
“Cabinet gave the Minister of Finance approval to vire about GH¢1.1 billion to absorb a category of health workers and teachers,” he announced. “The process will start soon, so there’s no need for further picketing.”
Broader Commitment to Public Sector Workforce
The announcement comes amid growing calls from public sector workers for timely validation, postings, and salary disbursements. The Ministry says the move is part of broader efforts to streamline human resource management in education and healthcare, and to address longstanding financial and administrative bottlenecks.
The Minister urged patience and cooperation from the affected professionals as the necessary steps are taken to finalise the process.
