Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Mourns Late Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has extended her condolences to the family of Ghana’s late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

Mrs. Sirleaf visited the residence of the late First Lady on Friday, October 24, 2025, to commiserate with the Rawlings family following Nana Konadu’s passing.

Nana Konadu, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. She was 76 years old.

She was Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady and a pioneer of women’s empowerment and social justice, widely celebrated for her leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement — an organization that championed education, healthcare, and economic empowerment for women across the country.

Her death has sparked an outpouring of grief from across Ghana and beyond, with leaders, organizations, and citizens paying tribute to her lifelong dedication to public service and advocacy for women.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor described Nana Konadu as an “indispensable figure in Ghana’s history,” acknowledging her immense contributions to national development.

“She did her best in her own way. In her life, she gave birth to beautiful children and served Ghana well,” Mr. Kufuor said.

“You cannot write Ghana’s history without her name in it. She contributed significantly to the making of Ghana, and her name will forever be etched in granite in our history. So please, do not be sad. The whole of Ghana, and indeed the world, mourns her loss.”

Funeral arrangements for the late First Lady are yet to be announced.
