The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will today, Tuesday, October 28, officially launch a year-long celebration to mark 60 years of the cedi, Ghana’s enduring symbol of economic sovereignty and national identity.
The official launch of the Cedi@60 commemoration will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre under the theme: “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to grace the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour.

Introduced on July 19, 1965, the cedi replaced the Ghana pound and has since undergone several reforms and redesigns, reflecting the nation’s economic evolution and resilience through six decades of development.
According to the Bank of Ghana, the Cedi@60 milestone is not only a moment to reflect on history but also an opportunity to rekindle public confidence in the national currency as a pillar of stability and identity.
As part of the year-long celebrations, the central bank will embark on a series of regional roadshows, public education campaigns on clean note handling and currency security, and youth competitions in art, music, and essay writing — all aimed at deepening public appreciation of the cedi’s legacy.
A major highlight of the programme will be a Currency Conference, which will bring together leading experts from global central banks, academia, and the private sector to reflect on Ghana’s monetary evolution and explore strategies for the future of the financial system.
The Bank of Ghana says the commemoration will culminate in renewed public awareness and a collective commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the cedi for future generations.
