Court Withdraws Arrest Warrant for NPP’s Chairman Wontumi

The High Court has withdrawn the bench warrant it earlier issued for the arrest of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The decision came after Chairman Wontumi appeared in court shortly after the warrant was issued on Tuesday morning.

According to court records, the bench warrant was issued at about 9:40 a.m., but remained in effect until after 10 a.m., when Wontumi and his legal team arrived to request its withdrawal. The court officially rescinded the order at 11:39 a.m.

When the case was recalled, counsel for the NPP regional chairman, Andy Appiah-Kubi, explained that he had advised his client to appear at 10 a.m., believing that the court had scheduled a case management conference for that time.

The presiding judge accepted the explanation but cautioned Chairman Wontumi to ensure punctuality in all future appearances.

Chairman Wontumi is currently standing trial alongside Kwame Antwi, a director of Akonta Mining Limited, and the company itself. They have been charged with assigning mineral rights without lawful authorisation.
