Josephine Bonsu Overwhelmed by Accra Stadium Atmosphere After First Home Game for Black Queens

Black Queens forward Josephine Bonsu says she was left star-struck after playing her first game in Ghana, describing the atmosphere at the Accra Sports Stadium as “outstanding.”

The German-based defender was drafted into the senior national team ahead of the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament in Morocco. Due to preparations taking place outside the country, Bonsu had not yet had the opportunity to play on home soil — until Tuesday, October 28, when she featured in Ghana’s 4-0 win over the Cleopatras of Egypt in the second leg of the 2026 WAFCON Qualifiers.

Speaking at a post-match press conference, Bonsu expressed her amazement at the crowd and the scale of the stadium.

“It means a lot [to come here and represent Ghana]. When I was walking through the tunnel and to the pitch, and then I saw the fans, I was like, ‘Is this here in real life?’ It was loud, and it wasn’t too many people, to be honest, because the stadium is huge,” she said.
“The atmosphere was just outstanding, and in the middle of the game, sometimes, I was just looking around and just enjoying. This is a dream, and we have to enjoy every moment.”

Bonsu also reflected on the personal significance of representing Ghana, noting that it fulfills a dream she shares with her father. “It’s also a dream when you start playing football; it’s a dream to play for the national team. I am just giving back to my father, and now for this period, the four to five months that I have been here, it’s been crazy,” she added.

After helping Ghana secure a bronze medal at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco, Bonsu will be aiming to guide the Black Queens further in the 2026 tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Her experience underscores the growing excitement and support for women’s football in Ghana, highlighting both the challenges and rewards for players balancing international careers and national team duties.
