The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has expressed concern over the increasing trend of indecent dressing and unapproved hairstyles among students in the country’s secondary schools.
Addressing students and teachers during a visit to selected senior high schools in the Northern Region, the Minister emphasized the need for students to maintain discipline, neatness, and a decent appearance as part of their moral and academic training.
He noted that the Ministry of Education remains committed to promoting not only academic excellence but also moral and cultural values that reflect the nation’s identity and respect for discipline.
“It is disturbing to see some students ignoring school rules on dressing and grooming. As future leaders, you must understand that how you present yourself speaks volumes about your upbringing and respect for authority,” Hon. Iddrisu stated.
He urged heads of schools to strictly enforce dress codes and grooming standards, emphasizing that these regulations are not meant to restrict students’ freedom but to shape them into disciplined, responsible citizens.
The Minister also called on parents and guardians to play an active role in guiding their children on appropriate dressing and grooming, stressing that moral training begins at home.
“Education is not just about passing exams; it’s about building character. Neatness, modesty, and respect for rules are values that define a well-trained student,” he added.
Hon. Iddrisu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening discipline across all educational institutions and ensuring that schools remain centres for both intellectual and moral development.
