MP Threatens Exit from Parliament If Anti-LGBTQ Bill Is Not Passed.

Story by Doris Sarpong

The Member of Parliament for Ho West, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has stated firmly that he will not return to Parliament if the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill fails to be passed and signed into law.

According to Mr. Bedzrah, his position is rooted in moral conviction rather than political ambition. Speaking during a live interview, he declared, “If it’s not assented to, I will not come back to Parliament again. I’ve told my colleagues and everyone that if it’s not passed, I won’t return. What’s the point of serving if I can’t stand by my principles?”

Mr. Bedzrah, one of the key sponsors of the controversial bill, said his entire political life has been guided by the need to defend what he considers to be Ghanaian cultural and moral values. He emphasised that his commitment to the bill goes beyond politics, describing it as part of his identity and responsibility to future generations.

He also criticised Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accusing him of being “untruthful” about claims that he had previously sought to amend the bill while serving as Majority Leader in the previous Parliament.

“He has never come to us as sponsors to propose any amendment or hold discussions on changes to the bill,” Bedzrah insisted. “This is the first time I’m hearing such a claim, and I’m surprised that the same person now stands in Parliament advocating for it. That’s double-tongued.”

The Ho West MP explained that as part of the eight-member sponsorship team which includes Sam George and Ntim Fordjour they have always worked collectively to push the bill forward. He recalled that when some proposed changes were brought to the House, they were overwhelmingly rejected.

Mr. Bedzrah maintained that his stance on the bill is not politically motivated but based on principle. For him, the passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill will determine whether he continues his 16-year parliamentary career.
