Asutifi North MP Ebenezer Kwaku Addo Granted Bail, Barred from Leaving Accra Without Notice

The Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has been barred by the court from leaving the Greater Accra Region without notifying investigators, as part of his bail conditions.

The directive follows his alleged involvement in the Hwidiem galamsey clash, for which he faces provisional charges of assault on a public officer, unlawful damage, and rioting with weapons.

Mr. Addo was arraigned on Tuesday, 4th November 2025, and granted GH¢150,000 bail, with a requirement to report to investigators once every two weeks until the trial begins or the order is reversed. The court also cautioned him against any conduct that could frustrate the ongoing investigation.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Alex Odonkor, the case has assumed national significance and is now being handled by the CID Headquarters. Prosecutors argued that Mr. Addo’s influence could interfere with investigations, citing social media videos allegedly showing the incident and expressing concern that he might tamper with witnesses or evidence.

The defence opposed the request for remand, citing the presumption of innocence, Mr. Addo’s family responsibilities, and his permanent residence in Accra, assuring the court of his full cooperation.

The court granted bail under strict conditions and ordered Mr. Addo to reappear on 1st December 2025. Other accused individuals, including Zakaria Yakubu and one Alex, remain at large.

Background:
The charges stem from an alleged obstruction of an anti-illegal mining operation conducted by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) near Bronikrom–Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region on Saturday, 1st November 2025. The incident reportedly involved a confrontation between youth and a NAIMOS task force.

Mr. Addo has denied instigating the attack, explaining that his presence was intended to defuse tensions and maintain public order.
