All Six Victims of GAF Recruitment Tragedy Were Female, Says Mahama

President John Mahama has conveyed his profound sorrow and regret over the calamitous incident that befell the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, claiming the lives of six young women who had harbored aspirations of serving their nation.

In a poignant address at the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Initiative in Kumasi, Mahama described the incident as “a heartbreaking loss for the entire nation,” underscoring the immense tragedy that had befallen the families of the deceased and the country as a whole. The six victims, all female applicants, had reportedly been driven by a sense of patriotism and duty to serve their country, only to meet with a devastating fate.

“The tragic news is that I have been informed by the military that six young women, who simply sought an opportunity to serve their nation, lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident. We are praying for the 12 others who remain in critical condition,” Mahama said, his words imbued with a deep sense of sorrow and empathy.

Mahama extended his sincerest condolences to the bereaved families, wishing the injured a speedy and full recovery.

He also called for a thorough and exhaustive investigation into the circumstances that led to the tragic incident, emphasizing the imperative need for enhanced safety measures and protocols to prevent such calamities in the future.

The GAF has since confirmed the six fatalities and suspended the recruitment exercise pending further notice, as the country grapples with the aftermath of this devastating tragedy.
