Government Allocates GH¢292m for Free Sanitary Pads to Support Girls’ Education — Ato Forson

The government has earmarked GH¢292 million in the 2026 Budget to supply free sanitary pads to schoolgirls across the country, in a major effort to improve menstrual health management and reduce barriers to girls’ education.

Announcing the initiative during the presentation of the 2026 Budget Statement in Parliament on Thursday, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson said the allocation underscores the government’s determination to promote gender equality and ensure that no girl is denied an education due to lack of menstrual hygiene products.

“This allocation reflects our dedication to supporting the well-being of young women and removing barriers to learning,” Dr. Forson stated.

A Boost for Menstrual Health and School Attendance

The policy is expected to benefit millions of schoolgirls, particularly those in deprived communities, where access to sanitary pads remains a major challenge. Many girls miss several days of school each month due to the inability to afford menstrual hygiene products — a situation that contributes to absenteeism and, in some cases, increased dropout rates.

Government officials say the initiative will not only improve menstrual hygiene but also boost girls’ confidence and participation in academic activities.

Commitment to Gender Equality in Education

The Finance Minister stressed that the provision of free sanitary pads forms part of broader efforts to create an equitable learning environment for all students, regardless of gender or socioeconomic background.

“As we invest in infrastructure and academic resources, we must also invest in the dignity and well-being of our young girls,” Dr. Forson added.

Education advocates have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a transformative step toward addressing long-standing menstrual challenges that disproportionately affect girls in basic and secondary schools.
