The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has announced a postponement of the nationwide recruitment exercise for Ghana’s security services, shifting the start date from Saturday, November 15, to Monday, November 17.
The announcement, made on Friday, November 14, follows the tragic incident that occurred during the military recruitment exercise at the El Wak Sports Stadium, which resulted in multiple casualties and raised serious concerns about safety and crowd management.
According to the Interior Minister, the recruitment processes for the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the Ghana Prisons Service will now resume on Monday, with an updated schedule expected to be published in the national newspapers, on official government social media handles, and through the respective ministries and agencies.
Casualties and Injuries from the El Wak Incident
Initial reports confirm that 28 applicants were affected in the El Wak stampede.
- 12 applicants are in critical condition
- 5 are receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- 6 applicants have been confirmed dead
Additionally, a separate recruitment exercise held in Kumasi also recorded five injuries, prompting the Ministry to tighten safety protocols nationwide.
Government Response and Safety Measures
The Ministry of the Interior has assured the public that additional crowd control and safety measures will be implemented before the recruitment resumes. These measures aim to protect applicants and prevent a repeat of the tragic events as investigations into the incident continue.
Minister Mubarak expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe, transparent, and orderly recruitment process across all security agencies.
“The safety of applicants is paramount,” the Minister said, adding that the government is working closely with the relevant security and medical services to review procedures and enforce stricter safety guidelines at all recruitment centres.
Ongoing Investigations
An official inquiry has been launched to determine the cause of the tragedy at El Wak and to identify potential lapses in crowd control, emergency response, and coordination among the agencies involved. The findings will guide further reforms in the recruitment process.
The Ministry urged the public to remain calm and rely on official updates as efforts continue to stabilise affected applicants and support the families impacted by the incident.
