Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has emphasized that safeguarding the stability of the Cedi is a shared national responsibility, urging Ghanaians across all sectors to play their part.
He made the appeal during the Cedi@60 Conference in Accra, where policymakers, economists, and industry leaders gathered to reflect on Ghana’s national currency over the past 60 years.
“Protecting the Cedi is not the task of any one institution. It is a shared endeavour rooted in our belief in Ghana’s future,” Dr. Asiama stated, highlighting the importance of unity and collective effort in strengthening the currency.
He noted that the Cedi’s stability depends not only on macroeconomic policies but also on the confidence ordinary Ghanaians demonstrate daily. “Every Ghanaian—from schoolchildren learning to count to traders and entrepreneurs powering local commerce—has a role to play in supporting the currency,” he added.
The Governor expressed optimism about the country’s economic outlook, emphasizing that the next 60 years present an opportunity to reimagine the Cedi and build a more resilient financial system. He called on stakeholders to contribute ideas towards shaping a sustainable monetary future.
Dr. Asiama concluded by thanking participants for their dedication and encouraging a renewed sense of pride in Ghana’s national currency. His remarks set an optimistic tone for the conference, which is part of broader discussions on inflation control, exchange rate stability, and long-term economic reforms.
