Interior Ministry Grants Six-Week Gun Amnesty to Curb Illicit Firearms

The Ministry of the Interior has announced a six-week ultimatum for individuals possessing unregistered or illegal firearms, urging them to surrender their weapons voluntarily or face strict sanctions.

The nationwide Gun Amnesty Initiative will run from December 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026, as part of efforts to combat gun violence and reduce the proliferation of illicit arms across Ghana.

During this period, citizens are encouraged to return unregistered or illegally held firearms in a safe environment, with assurances of protection from prosecution.

Launching the initiative, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak warned that anyone found with illicit weapons after the deadline will face severe penalties. He emphasized that the campaign is vital for fostering a safer and more secure Ghanaian society.

Additionally, the Minister announced a temporary ban on the use of firearms during traditional festivities within the amnesty window. This measure aims to prevent celebratory gunfire, reduce injuries, and protect lives during community celebrations.
