His Royal Highness Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh, Arrives in Ghana to Strengthen UK-Ghana Partnership

His Royal Highness Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh, arrived in Ghana yesterday for a two-day working visit aimed at reinforcing the modern and evolving partnership between the United Kingdom and Ghana. The visit underscores both nations’ commitment to deepening collaboration in sustainable development, education, innovation, inclusive sports, and the Commonwealth.

During his time in Aburi, the Duke will visit a Kindergarten and a teaching student class at the Presbyterian Women’s College of Education. There, he will observe how Sabre Education is supporting the Government of Ghana to deliver a play-based teaching and learning programme that equips teachers with the skills needed to provide quality early childhood education. The UK has been a long-standing partner in Ghana’s efforts to expand universal access to early childhood learning.

At the historic Aburi Botanical Gardens, His Royal Highness will tour a plant nursery that propagates and preserves indigenous flora while serving as a practical learning environment for horticultural students. He will also interact with innovators from both the UK and Ghana’s cocoa industry, whose work in artisanal production, sustainable trade, and inclusive growth continues to transform cocoa-growing communities. The Duke will plant a commemorative tree, joining a tradition upheld by visiting dignitaries including Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Majesty King Charles III.

In Accra, The Duke of Edinburgh will meet participants of the Commonwealth Startup Fellowship Programme Bootcamp. Delivered in partnership with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK and Imperial College London, the programme supports startups across 24 Commonwealth countries that are tackling global challenges through innovation. This engagement highlights the UK’s ongoing commitment to entrepreneurship and inclusive economic growth across the Commonwealth.

A key highlight of the visit will be The Duke’s meeting with Ghana’s Paralympic athletes and sports associations ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The event will showcase the transformative power of inclusive sports in promoting physical well-being, character development, and social cohesion, while reaffirming Ghana’s leadership as a Commonwealth partner in Africa.

The Duke will also attend a UK-Ghana Theatre and Creative Arts event, which aims to strengthen collaboration in skills development and investment within Ghana’s vibrant creative sector. The programme will feature a special performance of “The Black Star – Teacher of Africa” by Kofi Adinkra, celebrating the legacy of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and demonstrating how cultural partnerships can deepen ties and spark shared innovation.

As part of the official itinerary, His Royal Highness will call on President John Mahama and participate in a durbar with the National House of Chiefs, reflecting the historic relationship between the British Royal Family and Ghana’s traditional leadership. He will also pay respects to Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah, at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

Speaking ahead of the visit, the British High Commissioner, Dr Christian Rogg, stated: “His Royal Highness’s visit to Ghana is a celebration of the strong and evolving relationship between the UK and Ghana. It’s about recognising our shared values and the real impact of our collaboration—from education and climate action to inclusive development and innovation. It also honours Ghana’s vital role and enduring leadership within the Commonwealth.”

The Duke is expected to engage with government officials, development partners, the Ghanaian diaspora, community stakeholders, and business leaders across the two-day visit—reflecting the vibrant living bridge between the UK and Ghana.

The visit will conclude with His Royal Highness attending the King’s Birthday Party at the British High Commissioner’s residence, an annual celebration that brings together leaders from government, business, civil society, and the diplomatic community to honour the longstanding UK-Ghana partnership.
