Martin Kpebu Released After Brief Detention at OSP; Interrogation Over Corruption Claims Still Pending

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has been released by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) after being detained on Wednesday, December 3, a development that temporarily halted plans to question him over corruption allegations he has made against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.

Kpebu was freed on Wednesday evening after satisfying bail conditions, which included providing a landed property in his name as security.

He had earlier arrived at the OSP for a scheduled engagement with investigators but reportedly clashed with police officers at the entrance. He was taken into custody before any interrogation could begin, with sources indicating that the Special Prosecutor could not proceed with questioning while he remained detained.

Although bail was granted in the afternoon, confusion emerged when Kpebu’s lawyer returned to finalise the process and was unable to locate him, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding his detention.

The episode adds to ongoing tensions between Kpebu and the OSP. The outspoken lawyer has repeatedly criticised the office’s investigative procedures, accusing Mr. Agyebeng of allowing procedural lapses and delegating sensitive inquiries to junior officers under his direct supervision.

Speaking to journalists before a separate meeting at the OSP last week, Kpebu insisted he would only cooperate with investigators if an independently constituted committee handled his case, arguing that the current arrangement compromises fairness and integrity.

He has also cited past concerns regarding the investigation of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, alleging that the OSP mishandled fundamental procedural steps in that matter as well.

The OSP has not yet commented on Wednesday’s events or on the status of the planned interrogation.
