Mahama Rejects Calls to Scrap Special Prosecutor’s Office, Says Demands Are Premature

President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed growing calls for the abolition of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing the demands as premature and urging that the institution be given more time to deliver on its mandate.

Debate over the relevance and effectiveness of the OSP has intensified in recent weeks, with critics arguing that the office has not demonstrated sufficient impact to justify its continued existence.

Speaking during a meeting with the National Peace Council, President Mahama cautioned against what he described as a hasty and counterproductive move. He emphasized the broader need to strengthen—rather than dismantle—institutions that advance transparency, accountability, and good governance.

The President also encouraged the OSP to improve the pace and efficiency of its investigations.

“I think it is premature to call for the scrapping of the Office of the Special Prosecutor. We should give them a little time, and I urge the office to speed up with its work,” Mahama said.

Calls for the OSP’s dissolution were first made by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga following the detention of private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu. Several public figures, including former Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Oquaye, have since echoed the demand.

The government has not yet indicated whether it intends to review the mandate or structure of the OSP.
