Ghana’s emerging canoeing team has won its first-ever medal at the Africa Youth Games, held in Angola 2025. The duo of Maxwell Ofoi and Okronipa Ohene Emmanuel claimed a bronze medal in the 1000 metres Canoe Double (C2) event.
Competing in their first major Games, the young athletes showed great courage and determination. They finished in third place, competing against teams from 12 nations.
Their performance surprised many, as they kept pace with more experienced canoeing countries. The result highlights both their physical endurance and strong mindset. This bronze medal is an important step forward for Ghana’s developing canoeing program.

Mr. Kamal Sulley, President of the Ghana Rowing and Canoeing Federation, praised the achievement. “This is a major improvement from our past results. It clearly shows that Ghana is on the right path in rowing and canoeing,” he stated.
Due to their success, Ofoi and Emmanuel have been invited to a high-performance training camp in South Africa in January 2026. This camp will prepare them for the Junior World Cup Championship in Poznań, Poland.
Canoeing is still a new sport in Ghana. This bronze medal proves the country’s potential and serves as an inspiration for young athletes across the nation. It demonstrates that with dedication and support, Ghanaian athletes can succeed on the world stage.
