Asantehene Calls for Stronger Police–Traditional Authority Collaboration

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for closer collaboration between traditional authorities and the Ghana Police Service, urging the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to see chiefs as strategic allies in community policing.

He appealed during a historic courtesy visit to the IGP on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

The Asantehene emphasised the importance of deeper, institutionalised cooperation between the police and traditional leaders, noting that such partnerships are critical to strengthening security and building trust within communities.

According to him, effective policing in Ghana requires an appreciation of local customs and traditions, stressing that officers who understand the cultural dynamics of the communities they serve are better positioned to engage constructively and resolve conflicts peacefully.

“I have come to join you for deeper institutionalised collaboration between traditional authorities and the Ghana Police Service. Let chiefs serve as allies in community policing. Let officers be trained to understand the customs of the people they protect,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said.

He further underscored the importance of dialogue and mediation as primary tools in law enforcement, particularly in community settings.

“Let dialogue proceed deployment and mediation proceed confrontation. This is not softness but intelligence,” the Asantehene added.

The call has been widely viewed as a significant step toward fostering stronger ties between customary leadership and the police, with stakeholders noting that enhanced cooperation could improve intelligence sharing, reduce tensions, and promote more effective community-based policing across the country.
