NPP Begins Process to Expel Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng Over “Fake Party” Comments

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it has initiated processes to expel former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, following comments he made describing the party as “fake” and distancing himself from its membership.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng made the remarks during an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on Monday, January 12, 2026. In the interview, he criticised the current state of the NPP, saying it no longer reflects the values and principles of the party he once knew.

“The present NPP is not NPP. It is fake. From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know,” he stated.

When asked whether he still considered himself a member of the party, the former minister said he no longer associates with what he described as the current version of the NPP.

“Not the fake one. The real one is there. It is a virtual thing. The members are in the background,” he added.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng also warned that re-electing former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer would be a “trainwreck” for the NPP.

In response, the NPP issued a statement on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, indicating that the party had taken serious exception to the comments.

According to the statement, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng not only questioned the credibility of the party but also alleged that the NPP’s 2023 presidential primary was rigged in favour of Dr. Bawumia, the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.

The party rejected the allegation, stating that it “unequivocally rejects Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s unfortunate characterisation of the NPP and firmly denies his baseless and unsubstantiated allegations regarding the conduct of the 2023 Presidential Primary.”

The NPP maintained that the primary was conducted in a free, fair, transparent and credible manner, and was widely accepted by all participating candidates and party members as a true reflection of the will of delegates.

It further described Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s comments and conduct as highly reprehensible and damaging to the unity, values and integrity of the party.

Consequently, the statement said the party has invoked the relevant provisions of its constitution to begin the necessary processes to expel him, assuring that all actions will be carried out strictly in accordance with due process.
