Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has described 2025 as one of the most challenging periods for Ghana’s economy, saying it required difficult decisions, careful policy sequencing and sustained institutional discipline.
Speaking at the Bank of Ghana’s New Year media briefing in Accra on Friday, January 16, Dr Asiama said the year was characterised by significant economic adjustments that had far-reaching effects on markets, households and financial institutions.
According to him, the harsh economic conditions compelled authorities to make tough judgments aimed at stabilising the economy and rebuilding public confidence.
“The year 2025 was not an easy one. It required difficult judgement, careful sequencing in our policy actions and sustained discipline across institutions,” he stated.
Dr Asiama noted that the period saw extensive reforms, including the passage of new legislation, amendments to existing laws and the introduction of new guidelines to regulate the financial markets.
He added that the Bank of Ghana also expanded the scope of its financial supervision as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s financial system.
Describing 2025 as a year of necessary adjustments, the Governor said the measures implemented were intended to lay a solid foundation for long-term economic stability and growth.
Dr Asiama further commended the media for its role in explaining the economic situation and policy decisions to the public during the challenging period.
“Through it all, the media played an essential role in helping Ghanaians understand what was happening, why certain difficult choices were being made and what those choices were intended to achieve,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to journalists for their contribution throughout the year, noting that accurate and responsible reporting helped improve public understanding of the economic reforms and policy direction.
