In a moment of cultural symbolism ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations final, the Teranga Lion’s of Senegal social media has shared a cryptic message, drawing a parallel between the nation’s cherished tea ceremony and the decisive battle awaiting them.
The message, centered on the tradition of “Ataya” a precise, patient, and communal process of preparing and sharing Senegalese tea, is a clear nod to the team’s mindset. “Concentration, patience, sharing. As on the pitch, everything is decided in the details,” the post stated, concluding with “Finale in sight.”
The focus of the message is the team’s famed midfielder, Idrissa Gana Gueye, identified by his squad number 5. Hailed as the “midfielder, conductor… and in charge of serving the Ataya,” Gueye embodies the values essential for Sunday’s final. The analogy suggests that controlling the tempo, maintaining composure under pressure, and cohesive teamwork, much like the steps of preparing the perfect tea, will be paramount.
Senegal earned their place in the final after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Egypt in the semi-finals. Their opponent will be tournament hosts Morocco, who secured their final berth following a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Nigeria after a tense encounter.

The stage is thus set for an epic final. For Senegal, the path to winning their second AFCON goes through the host nation and another North African giant. The team’s subtle messaging indicates they are prepared to brew their challenge with the same deliberate care and unity as their beloved Ataya, aiming to lift the trophy once more.
