The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election, Baba Jamal, has drawn number one on the ballot paper, placing him at the top position for voters in the March 3 poll.
His main contender, Yussif Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured the number three spot. The Liberal People’s Party (LPP) candidate, Ibrahim Iddrisu, drew number two.
Independent candidates Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda and David Kannor will occupy the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
The balloting exercise was conducted on Thursday, February 12, at the Electoral Commission (EC) office in the constituency in Accra. This followed the successful filing of nominations by all candidates on Wednesday, February 11.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January while receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Speaking to the media after the balloting, Baba Jamal expressed optimism about his position on the ballot, describing it as symbolic of victory.
Drawing number one, he said, gives him an added psychological advantage and reflects the confidence he has in winning the seat for the NDC.
The March 3 by-election is expected to attract keen political interest as parties intensify their campaigns in the traditionally competitive constituency.
