Saint Luke Anglican Church Launches Centenary Celebrations with Colourful Street Float in Kwashieman

Story by Emmanuel Amoo

The streets of Kwashieman and its surrounding communities came alive with colour, music, smiles, and infectious energy on Saturday morning as Saint Luke Anglican Church officially launched activities marking its 100th anniversary.

To kick-start the historic milestone, members of the congregation embarked on a massive centenary float through the principal streets of the area, signalling the beginning of a year-long celebration of faith, legacy, and community impact. The float, themed “Ride the Centenary Wave,” attracted hundreds of parishioners and residents who joined in dancing, singing, and waving banners in celebration of the church’s ten decades of service in the capital.

The centenary celebrations are anchored under the theme “A century of enduring legacy, inspiring lives. Hebrews 10:23-25“, a message that reflects the church’s rich history and its vision for the future.

Beyond the colourful procession, the anniversary marks a major turning point for the parish. This month also features the groundbreaking ceremony for a new centenary building project, described by the church as “From Legacy to Landmark – The Next 100 Begins Here.” The project symbolizes Saint Luke’s commitment to sustaining its mission and expanding its impact for generations to come.

Unveiling the anniversary calendar, church leaders announced a series of carefully planned activities spanning the entire year. These include guild visitations and “Day Born Too” celebrations, a massive medical outreach in April dubbed “A Day of Giving – A Lifetime of Impact,” and a Children’s Month celebration in June themed “Generation Next: 100 Years and Beyond.”

Other highlights include a musical concert titled “A Century of Praise,” and a dinner, awards ceremony, and book launch in September under the theme “Centenary Gala – Where History Meets Celebration and Honour.” The celebrations will climax in October with a donation exercise for the less privileged, “Giving Back with Love – Celebrating 100 Years Together,” a grand outdoor crusade dubbed “100 Years of Faith – Proclaiming Christ to All,” and a grand thanksgiving service at the church premises themed “A Century of Blessings – A Heart Full of Thanks.”

Speaking at the event, Mr. Emmanuel Nii Adotey Adotey, a member of the anniversary planning committee, expressed his excitement about the successful launch of the centenary celebrations. He gave a brief overview of the activities planned for the year and expressed profound gratitude to the Chief and principal elders of the Kwashieman Traditional Area for honouring the float with their presence.

Another committee member, Mr. Albert Turkson, noted that the centenary walk was not only for celebration but also for evangelism and public awareness. “This walk is to let the world know that Saint Luke Anglican Church is 100 years old,” he said. He expressed joy at the large turnout, which exceeded initial projections, and also shared insights into the upcoming “Great Banquet,” thanking all participants for making the float impactful.

Mr. Samuel Obirikorang, a member of the Evangelism Committee, highlighted the outreach dimension of the float. He explained that scriptural tracts and specially customized invitation materials were shared with commuters as part of the church’s evangelism strategy. He also invited the general public to participate in the “Great Banquet,” which will feature free meals, medical screening, and the distribution of clothing. He encouraged parishioners and community members alike to fully participate in the centenary celebrations.

The Sunday School children were also actively involved in the float, adding colour and youthful enthusiasm to the event as they joyfully shared their excitement about being part of the historic moment.

Several parishioners shared their excitement about the centenary walk and the activities lined up for the year. Sister Delali, one of the participants, reiterated the relevance of the anniversary theme, noting that it perfectly captures the essence of the celebrations. She also used the opportunity to call on former members of the church to return and reconnect, encouraging them to come and celebrate the legacy they helped build.

As Saint Luke Anglican Church steps into its centenary year, the vibrant launch has set the tone for a season of reflection, thanksgiving, outreach, and renewed commitment to faith and community.
