The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, has announced plans for a targeted policy workshop aimed at improving the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) to align it with global best practices.
According to Dr Asiama, the Central Bank will collaborate with the GoldBod and the Ministry of Finance to convene the workshop, which will bring together experts, market practitioners, and policymakers to assess and refine the programme.
He disclosed while addressing participants at the 77th Annual New Year School held at the University of Ghana on Tuesday, January 6.
“The Bank of Ghana, working with the GoldBod and the Ministry of Finance, we intend to convene a focused policy workshop with experts, market practitioners, and policymakers to examine how this national priority can be refined further in line with best practices elsewhere,” Dr Asiama stated.
The BoG Governor explained that the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme was introduced at a time of significant economic strain and has since played a key role beyond its initial objective of economic stabilisation.
He noted that the programme has contributed to restoring confidence in the economy, despite some implementation challenges.
“Arguably, the institutional role of the GoldBod has strengthened coordination across the value chain, while the introduction of a gold FX auction mechanism has enabled more structured and transparent intermediation of gold-related foreign exchange flows,” he said.
Looking ahead to 2026, Dr Asiama stressed the need to firmly anchor the Gold for Reserves (G4R) programme within the broader Government of Ghana framework to ensure its long-term sustainability.
Addressing President John Dramani Mahama, who was present at the event, he said responsibility for the programme should be shared across institutions rather than resting on a single entity.
“The G4R programme must be anchored more firmly within the broader Government of Ghana framework as a national priority, and responsibility will be shared in such a way that sustainability does not rest on any single institution,” he stated.
Dr Asiama encouraged robust public engagement on the programme, calling for informed debate, evidence-based analysis, and diverse perspectives to strengthen critical national initiatives such as the DGPP.
