Ayawaso East NDC Candidate Baba Jamal Denies Vote Buying Allegations

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East Constituency, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has once again denied allegations of vote buying linked to the party’s parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026.

In a statement issued to media houses on Monday, February 9, Baba Jamal confirmed that he had appeared before a three-member investigative committee constituted by the NDC to probe claims of inducements during the primary. He said he used the opportunity to categorically deny any involvement in vote buying and reaffirmed his innocence.

According to him, his political record in the constituency reflects a strong commitment to internal party democracy. He noted that he had previously contested two parliamentary primaries in Ayawaso East and lost on both occasions to the late Member of Parliament—outcomes he said he accepted in the interest of party unity and cohesion.

Baba Jamal further recalled that during the NDC primaries ahead of the 2024 general elections, he secured 309 votes against the winner’s 452 votes, stressing that his growing support base within the constituency is the result of his initiatives, integrity, and dedication to effective representation for Ayawaso East.

He expressed appreciation to the investigative committee, chaired by former Minister of Information Kofi Totobi Quakyi, for giving him the opportunity to present his side of the story. He also thanked delegates in the constituency for the confidence reposed in him to lead the party into the forthcoming by-election.

Meanwhile, the NDC committee probing the allegations has assured party members and the public that it is making steady progress and remains on track to conclude its work within the stipulated timeline. Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, committee member and former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, said the team has been engaging party officials, executives, and all candidates who contested the primary as part of its fact-finding mandate.

The committee, which also includes legal practitioner Emefa Fugah, is expected to submit its findings and recommendations by Tuesday, February 10. Beyond investigating the alleged vote buying, the committee is also tasked with proposing measures to prevent inducements and related practices in future party primaries.

The Ayawaso East primary has generated controversy following reports that some delegates were allegedly induced with items including television sets and boiled eggs, sparking public debate and internal concern within the party.

Baba Jamal has reaffirmed his commitment to the NDC and to the development of the Ayawaso East Constituency, stating that his political ambition remains driven by a collective desire to improve the lives of residents and secure stronger representation in Parliament.
