The El Wak Wings Ladies volleyball team is gearing up for the African Club Championship in Abuja, Nigeria, and is appealing for support from the corporate sector and the Ministry of Sports.
The team, led by middle player Joana Mensah, will compete against 20 other top women’s volleyball clubs from across Africa, including powerhouses like Al Ahly Sporting Club and Zamalek Sporting Club from Egypt.
According to team manager Divine Edem Dotse, the team is in dire need of financial support to cover expenses such as flight tickets, accommodation, and food in Abuja.
“We are preparing feverishly for the tournament, but we need financial support to make it happen,” Dotse told the Daily Graphic. “This tournament is a must-attend for us, as it puts Ghana volleyball on the limelight and recognizes club competition in the country.”
Dotse emphasized that the competition will provide a favorable ranking for volleyball clubs in Ghana and give national players much-needed exposure.
“We are representing Ghana, and we must put up our best and do our best to raise the flag of Ghana very high,” he said. “We need the support of all and sundry to save Ghana from repudiation.”
The African Club Championship is scheduled to take place from April 1 to April 14, and El Wak Wings Ladies are eager to make a strong impression.
The team’s appeal for support has been echoed by volleyball enthusiasts, who believe that the team’s participation in the championship will boost the sport’s profile in Ghana.
As the team prepares to depart for Abuja, they remain hopeful that their appeal for support will be answered, enabling them to compete at their best and make Ghana proud.
