A dramatic protest unfolded at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra on Thursday, as Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) staged a sit-in demonstration to demand the immediate release of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The MPs, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, marched from Parliament to the EOCO office before occupying the premises in a symbolic act of defiance. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, the lawmakers voiced their anger over what they termed as “unreasonable and politically motivated” bail conditions imposed on their party colleague.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested earlier this week and interrogated by EOCO. Following his questioning, he was granted bail set at GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified—a condition the NPP MPs argue is both excessive and targeted.
“We are not just going to walk away. We will remain here,” said Afenyo-Markin during the sit-in. “Those in charge must be professional. What is happening to Wontumi can happen to me tomorrow; it can happen to my respected senior here tomorrow… Enough is enough.”
The sit-in has significantly escalated tensions between the legislative arm and investigative authorities, with the Minority insisting on the need for due process, equity, and non-discrimination in the treatment of political figures.
EOCO has yet to officially respond to the protest or revise the bail terms.
