The President of the National Association of Registered Midwives, Ghana (NARM-GH), Mrs. Leticia Asaaba Atiah, has sparked a heated debate in the healthcare sector by asserting that it is unfair to pay nurses and midwives the same salary.
She said this during an interview with Mensah Maxwell last Thursday.
According to Mrs. Atiah, midwives play a unique and critical role in the healthcare system, often dealing with two or more lives at a time – the mother and the unborn child.
This, she argues, requires a distinct set of skills, expertise, and emotional labor that is not adequately reflected in their current compensation.
“Midwives are not just healthcare professionals, they are guardians of life. They work tirelessly to ensure the safe delivery of babies and the well-being of mothers. It is only fair that they are recognized and rewarded for their exceptional work,” Mrs. Atiah emphasized.
The NARM-GH President’s comments have resonated with many midwives, who feel that their contributions to the healthcare system are often overlooked and undervalued.
In an interview with Mensah Maxwell, she argue that the current pay structure does not reflect the level of skill, expertise, and responsibility required of midwives.
As the debate on fair compensation for midwives continues, Mrs. Atiah’s advocacy has shed light on the critical role that midwives play in the healthcare system and the need for their work to be recognized and valued.
