60 NPP MPs Visit Dr. Bawumia to Pledge Support Ahead of 2026 Presidential Primaries

60 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have paid a courtesy visit to former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at his Nima office in Accra to pledge their support as he considers contesting in the party’s upcoming 2026 presidential primaries.

The visit, which took place on Thursday, June 18, has generated widespread attention following the circulation of a viral video featuring Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku, who confirmed the group’s mission.

“We are here to see His Excellency and also have a discussion with him as far as the presidential primary is concerned, and also hear from him if it is something that he is considering,” Awuku stated.

Support Gathers for Bawumia

Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP in the 2024 general elections, has yet to officially announce whether he will seek re-election as the party’s flagbearer. However, Thursday’s show of support from a significant bloc of NPP MPs suggests momentum is building behind his potential candidacy.

Reacting to the visit on social media, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a spokesperson for Dr. Bawumia, expressed confidence in his political future:

“DMB remains our fastest path to election 2028 victory,” Aboagye wrote on Facebook.

Key Date Set for Primaries

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the NPP, following a meeting on June 17 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, has set Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the date for the party’s Presidential Primary. The meeting also discussed proposed constitutional reforms spearheaded by the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee, signaling a wider strategic review ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia led the NPP into the 2024 general elections, where he narrowly lost to the opposition. His political base remains strong, and the early endorsement from a large segment of the party’s parliamentary caucus positions him as a leading contender, should he decide to run again.

The race for the NPP flagbearer position is expected to intensify in the coming months, with party figures such as Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum already declaring their intent to contest.
